Guess what? André 3000 has just surprised us all with his latest instrumental album, “New Blue Sun,” announced just this week. This collection features instrumental improvisations and collaborative recordings with talents like Carlos Niño, Surya Botofasina, and Nate Mercereau. Take a listen to the album below!
In the detailed credits, André 3000 showcases his musical prowess, playing a range of instruments such as digital wind instruments, contrabass flute, wood and bamboo flutes, Maya flute, pedals, and even experimenting with “panther toning” on a track titled “That Night in Hawaii When I Turned Into a Panther and Started Making These Low Register Purring Tones That I Couldn’t Control … Sh¥t Was Wild.”
While André 3000 has made guest appearances on various artists’ records and reunited with Outkast for performances alongside Big Boi, what makes this solo album noteworthy is its flute-centric focus and its emergence so late into his solo recording career after Outkast’s album-making era.
In a recent interview with NPR’s Rodney Carmichael on All Songs Considered, André 3000 shared, “It’s not like I don’t try or it’s not like I have a lot of these songs just sitting—I have songs but it’s not like rap things that I really feel happy about sharing. And really, that’s the most important part. I have to feel happy about sharing it. That’s why ‘New Blue Sun’ was something that I realized, whoa, I really want people to hear it. I really want to share it.”
